Sam Van Buggenhout (CG 5’9″, 2001) from Belgium

Sam is a CG with good knowledge and feeling for the game, but she has a regular size and limited athleticism (but she was born late 2001, so she will probably be the youngest player in our 2001’s ranking) . She has neither huge explosiveness nor quickness, but she usually does the correct move at the right time. Her fundamentals make her an interesting prospect in the O end, and her determination and quick hands allow Sam to be a correct defender.

In the D end Van Buggenhout doesn’t display a big physical game nor quick lateral mobility, but she usually knows what to do. Her knowledge and intuition allow Sam to stay in the correct place at the right time, and her quick hands makes Sam in a thief from the weak side. The Belgian plays fearless through the contact, and we can see her hitting and boxing out against bigger players.

In the O end, Van Buggenhout shows a great mentality as a shooter: confidence, quick release, almost infallible in spot shot situations… It’s that kind of player that is better guard her closely when she is behind the arc. We can think on Sam as a pure shooter, but she is able to do much more. Sam is as interesting passer, with good vision court and great passing skills. Despite of that Sam still struggles playing as a pure PG, because she has promising dribbling fundamentals, but she has neither dribbling ability with left hand nor under pressure. She can score on layup situations, even through the contact, getting buckets and additional FTs (almost 73% from charity line). The Belgian should be your chosen one to hit the last shot.
